FAQs
How does laser hair removal work?
The concentrated beam of light used in laser hair removal is absorbed by the pigment in the hair, which then converts the light energy into heat. This heat is directed towards the hair follicle, damaging it and inhibiting future hair growth. This process is precise and targeted, meaning that only the hair follicle is affected while the surrounding skin is left unharmed.
Is laser hair removal painful?
Not really, especially when compared to waxing or electrolysis. The latest technology in laser hair removal machines, like Flycatcher's LightSheer QUATTRO, uses a cooling system to numb the skin during treatment. This reduces discomfort you may feel during the process, which is often described as a slight pinch or snap. Plus, the sessions are relatively short, so any discomfort is over quickly.
Who is NOT a good candidate for laser hair removal?
Our laser hair removal device works effectively with all skin tones, light to dark. An exception to this is very light skin with very light hair color (especially gray hair). The laser has a difficult time targeting these hair follicles. Also, if you are unable – or unwilling – to keep your treated area protected from the sun pre- and post-treatment then you are not a good candidate.
Can I get laser hair removal over a tattoo?
Absolutely not. This can be extremely dangerous and painful. The laser will target the pigment in the ink which can result in burns and skin damage. Our laser hair removal providers stay at least 1" away from all tattoos.
Why do you recommend six treatments in a package?
Laser hair removal can be a permanent solution but it will take multiple treatments. This is not a one-and-done solution. Men typically need at least six sessions and it is not uncommon to need up to 10 sessions. Darker skin tones can require more treatments. Depending on your individual hair growth patterns and hormone levels, you may require maintenance treatments to keep your body hair-free over time. An annual touch-up session is typically recommended to ensure that any new hair growth is effectively treated, and to maintain the smooth, hair-free look you desire.
How do I prepare for my laser treatment?
Reducing your exposure to direct sunlight is crucial before undergoing laser hair removal. This means avoiding tanning beds, sunbathing, and any other activities that will expose your treatment area to the sun's harmful UV rays. Two weeks prior to your treatment, it's essential to wear sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 every day. It is equally important that you shave the treated area immediately prior to your treatment. Our laser technicians do not shave our clients. If you have not shaved you cannot receive treatment, unfortunately. Be sure to clean your skin thoroughly before your appointment. This will remove any dirt or oil that may be on your skin, allowing the laser to penetrate more effectively. It's also important to avoid using any skincare products that contain harsh chemicals, such as retinoids or alpha-hydroxy acids, for at least a week before your treatment.
How long does a typical laser treatment last?
This depends on the size and number of areas being treated. Small areas, like your neck, can be treated in 10 to 15 minutes. Larger areas, like your back and shoulders, can take up to 45 minutes.
When should I come back for my next treatment?
This will depend on how each unique individual responds to laser hair removal treatment. Each session will be scheduled at a minimum of four weeks apart. Six weeks may be best for you. Considering this frequency, six to ten months can be required to achieve your goal of permanent hair removal.
What can I expect post-treatment?
Besides feeling like a bad-ass? No recovery or downtime for one. That said, understand that your body is especially vulnerable during the first two weeks post-treatment. It's important to continue protecting yourself from the sun by using sunscreen and covering the treated areas. This will minimize the risk of side effects. Immediately following your treatment, we advise that you stay away from strenuous activities that promote sweating in your treated area.
Anything I should avoid in between treatments?
Not really. Just be diligent in protecting your treated areas from the sun.
Is laser hair removal permanent?
Laser hair removal – or reduction – can be a permanent solution but it will take multiple treatments. This is not a one-and-done solution. You must be invested in the process in order to achieve the best results. Annual maintenance treatments are typically recommended to ensure that any new hair growth is effectively treated and to maintain the smooth, hair-free look you desire.
Is laser hair removal safe?
Laser hair removal is very safe although with any medical procedure, there are potential side effects and risks to consider. Temporary redness immediately after treatment is common. Hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation of the skin is very rare, as are skin burns. Laser hair removal does not cause cancer and it does not affect male fertility.
What laser device do you use?
Our technicians utilize the LightSheer QUATTRO from Lumenis in our practice. This can treat the full range of skin types, with settings carefully calibrated to the patient's Fitzpatrick score to minimize the risk of side effects and achieve the desired results. It's a very efficient device for laser hair removal and allows for minimal discomfort.
