Unlocking Youth: How RF Microneedling Turns Back Time for Men
Take a hard look in the mirror – Do you like what you see?
Let’s be honest. The days of your youth are past, and perhaps you’re finally starting to notice a little wear and tear on your face and neck. Maybe you don’t like the fine lines, wrinkles, scars, stretch marks, large pores, and loose, sagging skin you’re now seeing.
The maturing men of the old Hollywood era like Buster Keaton, Jimmy Stewart, Cary Grant, and Charlton Heston honestly looked pretty damn good in black-and-white. But today’s full-color cameras, modern image renderings, and let’s face it – the mirror – don’t seem to paint you in the same positive light.
Is there anything you can do to get back to the classic, timeless, enduring good looks you want for yourself?
What is RF Microneedling?
Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure that utilizes small needles to create micro-channels (i.e.- wounds) to trigger the body’s natural healing response, producing more collagen and elastin in the affected areas.
In addition to traditional microneedling treatments with our FDA-approved SkinPen device, Flycatcher offers a more aggressive approach with the Morpheus8 from InMode. This state-of-the-art device integrates radiofrequency (RF) energy with microneedling to address more severe conditions that would not be recommended for a SkinPen treatment.
Radiofrequency microneedling combines the benefits of traditional microneedling with the added advantage of radiofrequency energy to enhance skin rejuvenation.
As these needles penetrate the skin, they simultaneously deliver radiofrequency energy deep into the dermis. This dual-action approach not only stimulates the body's natural healing response but also uses thermal energy to tighten the skin and improve its texture. The heat generated by the radiofrequency energy helps to remodel the deeper layers of the skin, resulting in a smoother, firmer, and more youthful appearance.
The videos below show a comparison between a SkinPen microneedling treatment and treatment with Morpheus8 RF microneedling.
Skin Conditions Addressed by RF Microneedling
This innovative technology is particularly effective for addressing more severe skin concerns, offering a comprehensive solution for those seeking significant improvements in skin tone and elasticity:
- Moderate to severe wrinkles
- Areas of reduced skin elasticity (jowls, double-chins, eye bags, etc)
- Scars (including acne scarring)
- Stretch marks
- Large pores and uneven skin tone and texture
Specific Benefits of RF Microneedling
RF Microneedling is highly effective in rejuvenating and tightening the skin, with other notable benefits:
Softens lines & wrinkles: Let’s be honest – no man likes to look older than he really is. Premature aging that presents in the form of fine lines and wrinkles isn’t particularly flattering. RF microneedling effectively boosts collagen and elastin production, which serves to help smooth those unsightly lines, wrinkles, and crow’s feet.
Tightens up skin & shrinks large pores: Collagen levels are at their peak during early adulthood, around the age of 20, and then start to decline with a decrease of about 1% per year starting in the mid-to-late 20s. By the time men reach their 40s and 50s, the decline in collagen production and elasticity becomes much more noticeable.
RF microneedling can lift and tighten your skin and reduce sagging. For men over the age of 40, this loss of collagen and elasticity is most notable in the jowls, submental area (double-chins), and under the eyes.
Microneedling around large pores can help to shrink their appearance as well.
Reduces scars and stretch marks: Since RF microneedling is known to stimulate natural collagen and elastin generation, it’s effective in helping to address acne scars and many other sorts of scars, too.
It can help to reduce the appearance of stretch marks that show up after periods of rapid skin growth, no matter where you happen to find them.
Ideal for all skin types: It’s true! No matter your skin type, RF microneedling can be a great solution. But the best way to determine that is by scheduling a consultation with Flycatcher so we can evaluate your specific skin type and discuss your goals.

What to Expect during RF Microneedling treatment
At Flycatcher, our staff is fully trained and credentialed to perform RF microneedling procedures.
First, your skin will be thoroughly cleansed, and a topical numbing cream is applied to the specific areas to be treated. It takes 50-60 minutes for the numbing cream to kick in.
Next comes the actual procedure, which will only take 15 to 20 minutes. The Morpheus8 RF microneedling device is maneuvered over one area at a time in a "stamping" motion, beginning with your neck. Then our practitioner moves to your forhead, cheeks, around your eyes, before finishing with the area around your mouth.
Once the RF microneedling is completed, we cool the skin by applying cold packs for five to 10 minutes. That’s all there is to it, and then we let the natural healing process take over!
Does RF Microneedling Hurt?
We’ll shoot you straight, gents – having your skin poked and prodded by tiny little needles doesn’t tickle. Even so, it’s completely safe, and the needles used are very small.
The amount of discomfort you’ll experience is usually less than you might expect to feel. Our licensed practitioner will also apply a numbing cream to the skin before beginning, so folks generally experience only mild discomfort during the procedure.
Just note that your skin will be red and sensitive for a day or so, similar to the sensation of a sunburn. If you plan to go outside, make sure to use a good, chemical-free sunscreen. You’ll also want to keep your skin hydrated with a recommended moisturizer.
There will most likely be some bleeding during the treatment. Don't be alarmed- it's all part of the natural wound response.
Frequently asked questions
What’s the difference between Morpheus8 RF microneedling and traditional microneedling, like SkinPen?
This is a question we get a lot. While traditional microneedling and Morpheus8 RF microneedling are both effective in rejuvenating the skin, there are some notable differences in their respective modalities and levels of results.
Morpheus8 RF microneedling penetrates 4mm into the skin compared to a 2.5mm depth with SkinPen. RF microneedling typically produces faster, more dramatic improvements thanks in part to the added thermal energy provided that can reach an 8mm depth.
RF microneedling is also preferred for treating more complex and severe skin issues. Recovery for both procedures is generally minimal, but there can be more redness and swelling after an RF microneedling treatment due to its inclusion of deeper skin penetration and heat therapy.
Who is NOT a good candidate for RF microneedling treatment?
Issues to be flagged would include whether you’re currently using or recently used Accutane, have an active cold sore breakout, have a skin infection, are taking anticoagulants, are currently receiving chemotherapy or radiation therapy, are diabetic or suffer a thyroid dysfunction, or have a history of keloids, hypertrophic scarring, or poor wound healing.
How long does RF microneedling treatment take?
Including the required time for pre-numbing, a typical radiofrequency microneedling session lasts between 75-90 minutes. A treatment just around the eyes would be shorter, while a treatment including the full face and neck could take a little longer.
What are the side effects of RF microneedling treatment?
Radiofrequency microneedling is a safe and effective procedure, generally only producing temporary side effects like erythema (redness) and edema (swelling). Cold compression can be used to minimize this. Skin crusting around the micro wounds is common, but temporary. Breakouts of acne can also be a side effect.
How many RF microneedling treatments are needed, and how often? When will I see the results?
The results of microneedling aren’t instantaneous- It takes approximately three to four weeks for the neocollagenissis (i.e.- production of collagen) to start and this continues for up to three months post-treatment.
You can start seeing positive results after a single treatment, but for best results, we recommend a series of three treatments. These should be scheduled four weeks apart. We also recommend an annual “maintenance” treatment.
