Why I'm Opening a Medical Aesthetics Practice (Medspa) for Men in Austin

Men do care about how they look. Let's start there.

The outdated trope, "you're not a real man if you care about how you look," and the stigma attached is, thankfully, beginning to erode in our culture.

Today, men of all ages are staying active and investing in their health like never before. This is especially true in Austin, TX.

Just because we're getting older doesn't mean we shouldn't look and feel great. We live in Central Texas for goodness sake- surrounded by beautiful people awash in sunshine and blue skies. Why would anyone not want to be living as the best version of themselves?

Why a Medical Spa?

As women have been doing for decades, men are now seeking non-invasive, anti-aging treatments to ease the inevitable effects of Father Time (and that Central TX sun).

Demand for these treatments is soaring. In 2019 men accounted for approximately 13% of medical spa patient visits.1 By 2023, men are expected to account for 30% of spending with medical spas2; approximately $6.0 billion annually.

The medical aesthetics industry as a whole is expected to grow from $2.1 billion in 2013 to between $18.0 and $21.0 billion by end of 2023.3 That’s more than a 700% increase in revenue over a decade.

I like those numbers.

I was turned on to the medical aesthetics industry by my girlfriend, Aurora, who also happens to be Flycatcher's lead esthetician and laser technician. Having an ultra-curious business mind I couldn't help but ask her question after question about her work in the aesthetics industry.

My interest led to multiple medspa visits to various local establishments over the years where I tended to be disappointed by the overall experience (though not necessarily the treatment).

My main observation should surprise no one: Medical spas are not designed with men in mind.

Men are an afterthought.

This discovery couldn't have come at a better time. I had been seeking another business venture, specifically one related to helping men in some way.

I'm fortunate in that I've been surrounded by strong male role models much of my life, including my father. And, like most men, I've had my struggles and failures. But, I'm grateful for all I've learned along the way.

From this life experience has come an appreciation for what it means to be a man in today's world.

This is what Flycatcher celebrates: The man adored by his children, loved by his partner, and admired and respected by his friends and peers.

An unapologetic celebration of masculinity.

Our mission is to help men look and feel great about themselves, no matter their age, while providing an environment and experience that puts them at ease.

The man who wants to catch the attention of a new lover... Or the husband with the wife who brags about him to her friends... That’s who we’re here for.

Our aesthetic is inspired by Old Hollywood, an era when men weren't shy about looking their best.

Chris Heiler founder and CEO FlycatcherI believe that men still want to look and feel their best, at whatever stage in life they find themselves.

That’s why I created Flycatcher.
